Tom comes from a family of professional artists. He learned how to restore artwork from his dad, Allen F. Hermansader, a portrait painter and master art restorer. Their cousin, John B. Hermansader, a well-known New York City illustrator and master art restorer, assisted in teaching Tom methods and techniques in art restoration, especially paper restoration.
Tom and his dad worked together on restoring artwork and church murals. Additionally, Tom has restored maps, drawings, watercolors, oil paintings, and collectibles. Tom believes that it takes a real master painter to re-create an image, if necessary, and finish the restoration without altering its technique and/or style. According to Tom and his restoration teachers, the secret to art restoration is to bring the painting back to its original appearance, not to change it!
