Art Instruction

Tom graduated from Kutztown University, Kutztown, PA, which is recognized as being one of the finest art education institutions in the United States. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in 1973 and a Master's Degree in 1978, both in Art Education. In 2008 Kutztown University awarded Tom with the Rothermel Alumni Award which recognizes the notable and distinguished achievements of alumni in their professional life after 16 or more years. To date, of the more than 100 art education students who graduated in 1973, Tom is the only one to have received this award.

Tom taught art at Columbia Jr.-Sr. High School in Columbia, Pennsylvania from 1973 until 1988. Several of Tom's students went on to become professional artists, illustrators, art teachers, and art gallery owners. While Tom was busy painting and teaching on the secondary level, he also taught watercolor classes at the Lancaster County Art Association as well as private art classes at his home, at churches, and at other local schools.

Tom believes that "drawing is the backbone of art." He teaches the old masters' techniques of working with pencil, conte crayons, and charcoal which he learned at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, one of finest and oldest art schools in the United States. Tom feels that once a student masters drawing, learning how to mix and apply colors is easily learned. Art elements and art principles are emphasized by Tom.
