Penn Square at Christmas (Lancaster, PA)

Penn Square at Christmas (Lancaster, PA)

This watercolor entitled, Lancaster's Penn Square at Christmastime, is a scene depicting Christmas in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  This holiday scene shows the city's annual Christmas tree lighting with its multi-colored lights and its shining star.  Snow was still falling from that starlit night.  On the left is the Fulton Bank with candles in its windows. On the right is the popular Watt & Shand department store with two lighted Christmas decorations.  The Soldiers and Sailors monument can also be seen next to the tree.  The artist painted special people in this painting - Lancaster's Mayor Arthur Morris is seen gazing at the Christmas tree, Lancaster County Commissioner James E. Huber is walking beneath the Watt & Shand decorations, Mr. James Shand, Jr., President of Watt & Shand is on the left and the artist is on the right at Watt & Shand's front door, Ms. Betsy Brown, the Multiple Sclerosis Executive Director is walking on West King Street, the artist's daughter, Alyssa, is sitting on a sled, a young boy, Michael, is pointing at the tree along with his sister, Amy, an Amish man, and a few friends of the artist.  In a 1992 letter to the artist, Mr. James Shand, Jr., wrote, "We have heard many favorable remarks regarding your choice of our store as a subject, as well as compliments on the artwork itself."  See Credits.  Notice all the details in this watercolor painting - they are truly magnificent!   The artist painted this work of art as a fundraiser for the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Lancaster County.  Sales were stupendous and it was an all-time record breaker for MS.  Click Fundraisers.  Both limited editions were retired within days of its unveiling.  In 1988, 11,000 Christmas cards were sold of the painting.  Since then, the limited edition prints sell in the secondary market for about $2,500.00.  The number one artist proof with a remarque sold for $5,000.00.  In 2008, the Harrisburg Magazine featured this print in an article, Columbia Artist Creates and Restores.  This print may be the most recognizable print in Lancaster County ever!  This print is available as a poster print, open edition, and as a collectible.
