Haldeman Mansion (Bainbridge, PA)

Haldeman Mansion (Bainbridge, PA)

This watercolor of the Haldeman Mansion, located in Locust Grove, Pennsylvania, is of a two-and-one-half story stone mansion.  The mansion is located on the banks of the Susquehanna River, not far from Three Mile Island.  In 1811, Henry Haldeman, an iron master, built the mansion.  His son, Samuel Steman Haldeman, lived there from 1812 to 1835. Samuel S. Haldeman was a distinguished scientist and leading authority on natural history and the ethnic development of language and phonics.  He was a friend of Charles Darwin and Mr. Haldeman taught at Linden Hall, Delaware College and the University of Pennsylvania.  At the prime of his career, he lectured throughout Europe and belonged to 28 academic societies.  The building is on the National Register for Historic Places.  Society President, Margaret Hunt Landis and her husband,  Dr. James Landis, and Lancaster County Commissioner, James E. Huber, spearheaded the fundraising campaign. $27,000.00 of sales of this print was raised and Lancaster County matched that amount for a grand total of $54,000.00!  The largest single contribution - $16,325.00 came from Ogden-Martin, Inc.  In a letter dated May 19, 1988 to the artist, Mrs. Landis wrote, "On behalf of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society, thank you for the very beautiful painting of the mansion which you produced for us so quickly.  I was very proud to have Commissioner Huber unveil your beautiful work."  Click Fundraisers and Credits.  Notice the stonework and how the corner stones are much larger for stability, the shutters, columns, windows, chimneys, and more.  They are exact.  The landscape around the building as well as the glow in the sky and the daffodils in the corner add a touch of charm and beauty to this scene.  The detail in this painting is just magnificent!  This print is available as an open edition and as a collectible.  The limited editions have been retired.  Individuals have even used this print framed with two openings - one for the print and the other for a photograph.  (Wedding, engagement, newspaper article, etc.)
