Orphie's Day at White Rock Forge (Quarryville, PA)

Orphie's Day at White Rock Forge (Quarryville, PA)

This watercolor painting is called Orphie's Day at White Rock Forge.  It depicts members of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville walking through the White Rock Covered Bridge on Groundhog Day.  The bridge, built in 1847 by John Russell,  is a single span, wooden, double Burr trusses design with the addition of steel hanger rods.  It has a 103 foot span and a total length of 110 feet. It is Lancaster County's 2nd oldest covered bridge still open to traffic.  In 1980, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The bridge is on the banks of the Octorara Creek in Kirkwood.  It has been a yearly tradition for the members to begin their march through the bridge on Groundhog Day to hear Octoraro Orphie's weather prediction.  Orphie is a fuzzy-buck toothed creature, a ground who forecasts an early or late spring with help of his shadow. Up on a hill sits the groundhog lodge which was founded by George W. Hensel, Jr. in 1908.  The club has approximately 260 members and its purpose is for members to throw away worries, cares and woes, and have a good laugh at themselves.   Notice all the details in the painting - the bridge, landscape and the members of the club playing musical instruments, some in tall silk hats wearing long night shirts,  toting sherpherd's crooks, and more.  The ceremony is something to see and hear.  Wear your earplugs when they shoot the cannon and get there before the sun rises.  In 2008, the artist presented Dr. James Pennington, Governor of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville, this print.  It hangs in the lodge.  The detail in this painting is very accurate and the painting has a lot of life.  This print is available as a limited edition, open edition and as a collectible.  Individuals have even used this print framed with two openings - one for the print and the other for a certificate, photograph, etc.
